Driver on causing death charge on $400,000 bail

first_imgA 27-year-old man, who allegedly struck down and killed a 27-year-old labourer at Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was on Friday slapped with a causing-death-by dangerous-driving charge.Oscar Stoll, of Lot 675 Perseverance, EBD, denied the charge which stated that on December 10, 2018 at Peters Hall, he drove motor car PWW 9187 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Kwason Lewis.Stoll was represented by Attorney-at-Law Patrice Henry, who in a bail application told the court that his client was not a flight risk.Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail, but asked that conditions be applied if the defendant was to be released.Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan released Stoll on $400,000 bail. As a condition of bail, he is required to lodge his travel documents and report to the Providence Police Station every Friday until completion of trial. His driver’s licence was also suspended. The case was adjourned to January 18, 2019.According to reports, Lewis, along with his colleagues who are all attached to a private waste management company, was cleaning debris along the median on the eastern carriageway of the road. However, Stoll, who was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway, at a fast rate, swerved westward and hit the labourer.The now dead man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.
