Medical Matters: How to treat Acne?

first_imgContinuing his popular Medical Matters column, this week Dr Ciaran Roarty of Scally McDaid Roarty Medical Practice talks about acne. Acne is a common problem mainly associated with the teenage years though it can affect young babies and older adults. It causes black, red or white spots on the face, neck, back and chest. It more commonly affects boys and most teenagers develop it to some degree. Blocked skin pores (which usually have hair growing out of them and release oil)  become infected with bacteria and this is usually the underlying problem with acne. Sometimes other conditions e.g. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can also cause acne. Can anything make it worse?Covering acne with a lot of creams and makeup can exacerbate things as well as constantly touching your face with your hands (which can spread germs). Tight clothing, excessive sweating and certain medicines can also make things worse as well as picking or squeezing the spots. Poor hygiene does not cause acne and stress while not helping acne, is not a cause for it. Advice to people with acneWash twice a day with lukewarm water and an antiseptic wash. Do not use strong soaps and avoid abrasive cleansers with granules. Air dry your face. Your doctor can advise on various treatments which work really well for acne. Each individual is different however and your treatment may have to be tailored for you. They do take time to take effect. Your doctor may advise a topical gel or cream containing, for example, benzoyl peroxide. Other topical treatments that are prescribed are known as retinoids and your doctor will likely explain to you about any possible side effects and using sunblock. Topical antibiotics may be prescribed in combination with other treatments also. Antibiotic tablets work by killing germs that contribute to causing acne and are often prescribed along with a topical treatment. It takes time to work and it is important to tell your doctor if you intend becoming pregnant before commencing as some of the above treatments will not be advised. Certain contraceptive pills may help acne, while others can exacerbate it. Other more powerful tablets are also sometimes prescribed for more severe acne and they work by reducing the amount of oil made by your skin.  Any treatment takes up to 6 weeks for there to be any effect and may take up to 4 months to be most effective so you need to give it a chance to work. Ongoing topical treatments may be needed to keep spots at bay once the initial treatment has finished. Scars from acne can be treated by laser treatment, peeling treatments and collagen injections though these can be quite expensive. The above information is intended as advice only and should you have any concerns please contact your own Doctor. Dr Ciarán Roarty MB, BCh BAO MICGP DRCOG Grad. Cert. Obst. We’re warned that ‘winter is coming’ and that’s certainly true on the Emerald Isle when a warm, sunny day is often followed by a stormy, wintery one. However the changeable weather is probably not what attracted Game of Thrones producers to Northern Ireland; the breathtaking landscapes and magical ruins were a much more likely draw. There are lots of great geocaches placed near filming locations so you can do your own Game of Thrones caching tour. Here are some of the highlights: Winterfell / Castle WardWinterfell / Castle WardThe historic farmyard at Castle Ward on the edges of Strangford Lough was chosen as the location of Winterfell for the pilot series of Game of Thrones. Set on 820 acres of landscaped gardens and leafy woodland, the farmyard is just a tiny part of a massive estate which is home to lots of great geocaches.  Closest cache to Winterfell: Castle Ward Clocktower (GC3307G)Robb’s Camp / Audley’s Field and Castle Robb’s Camp / Audley’s Field and CastleOn the edge of the Castle Ward estate, perched on the banks of Strangford Lough, sits Audley’s Field and Castle, where many scenes were filmed in the first two seasons. The castle is an impressive 15th century tower house, and its slightly elevated position affords it great views over the lake. The location scouts really struck gold when they discovered Castle Ward!Closest cache to Robb’s Camp: Audleys Casle (GC59BXE)The Iron Islands / Ballintoy HarbourThe Iron Islands / Ballintoy HarbourOn the North Antrim Coast sits the secluded Ballintoy Harbour, hidden away at the end of a narrow and winding road. The tiny fishing harbour was chosen as the location for the Iron Islands and is where Theon Greyjoy first meets his sister Yara. There is both a traditional and an EarthCache located at this quaint port.Closest cache to the Iron Islands: The Fault Lies Here: Ballintoy Harbour (GC6H6KX)Where Robb Stark was proclaimed ‘King in the North’ / Inch Abbey Inch AbbeyThe Emerald Isle boasts many magnificent ruins but one of my favourites is the haunting Inch Abbey in Downpatrick. The abbey is a ruined monastic site and features an imposing Gothic window. It was at night in the middle of these ruins, where Robb Stark was proclaimed to be King in the North and the impressive east window is easily identifiable in the scene.Closest cache to where Robb Stark was proclaimed King in the North: Within an Inch (GC16AGQ)House Tully / Gosford Castle House Tully / Gosford CastleAnother castle, this time in County Armagh, was chosen as the location for House Tully of Riverrun. Gosford Castle, set in 27 acres of gorgeous woodland, dates from the 19th century but has been completely restored in recent years and is now home to private apartments, as well as the fictional Tully family! The leafy surrounds of Gosford Park is a veritable treasure trove of great geocaches.Closest cache to House of Tully: Game of Thrones# The Brothel (GC481TE)Dragonstone / Downhill Strand Dragonstone / Downhill StrandNorthern Ireland is not short on beautiful beaches and while the water temperature could be described as bracing at best, the scenery more than makes up for it. Downhill Strand affords the visitor golden sands, a fresh Atlantic breeze and a view of Mussenden Temple in its commanding position on a clifftop. If you go for a daytime stroll on the beach, it might be hard to imagine this as the location of Dragonstone, where the witch Melisandre leads King Baratheon to betray his gods, amidst dancing flames and shadows chanting about the night and its terrors.Closest cache to Dragonstone: Little Bridges #849 – “The Night is Dark…” (GC6FVD0)The King’s Road / The Dark HedgesThe King’s Road / The Dark HedgesBregagh Road is a stunning avenue of beech trees planted in the eighteenth century by the Stuart family to impress visitors as they approached their mansion, Gracehill House. The gnarled branches are still impressing visitors to this day, not least of all Game of Thrones fans, who come to see the King’s Road from season two. The avenue is a popular stop for tour buses so you need to get there early to get the best shot of the mangled branches.  Closest cache to the King’s Road: The Dark Hedges (GC38KY0)The above is just a sample of the many Game of Thrones filming locations you can find by geocaching your way around. There are many hidden gems that the location scouts managed to uncover, which leads one to wonder if they are in fact geocachers themselves?! The Geocaching Junkielast_img read more

Rajasthan Home Minister promises action in Alwar case

first_imgUnder pressure to act in the case of lynching of a man for transporting cows in Alwar district, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday said anyone found breaking the law will be punished. He reiterated that the State government would take action against “both the sides”.Speaking on the sidelines of the 11th Standing Committee Meeting of the Inter-State Council in New Delhi, Mr. Kataria said though deceased Pehlu Khan, a resident of Nuh in Haryana, did not have valid papers to transport the cattle out of Rajasthan, the people who allegedly thrashed him and his companions had taken the matter in their own hands.Mr. Kataria pointed out that only the Sub-Divisional Officer had the power to issue permit for carrying bovine animals out of the State. FIR registered“In this case, Pehlu Khan did not have valid documents,” he said. An FIR was registered against him for illegally transporting cows, the Minister addedHowever, it was the police who admitted him and others to the hospital in Behror and registered a case under Section 308 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code after the April 1 incident, he said. “When he died, the case was converted to Section 302 (murder) and several persons have since been arrested.”Law and order situationThe Minister denied that the law and order situation in the State had deteriorated after the incident.Pehlu Khan’s family members have stated that he had purchased the cows with proper receipts at a cattle fair organised by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and was falsely accused of smuggling the bovine animals. Two more heldThe police have arrested two more persons – Dayanand, 40, and Neeraj, 19 – in connection with Pehlu Khan’s murder, on the basis of video footage of the April 1 incident. Faux pas leaves govt. red-faced

first_imgNagpur – The Maharashtra government was left red-faced in the State Assembly on Wednesday when the Speaker had to cancel a calling attention motion as the Agriculture Minister was unaware of cotton crops being hit by pink bollworm infestation.Officials of the Agriculture Department failed to brief Agriculture Minister Pandurang Fundkar on the raging problem for which 69 members of the Assembly had moved the calling attention motion and demanded a detailed discussion.Speaker Haribhau Bagde announced postponement of the motion owing to lack of information of government officers on the issue. Members of the opposition immediately demanded an apology from the government and accused it of shielding private seed companies.Nationalist Congress Party MLA Ajit Pawar said, “The issue is not new. How can the Minister not get an answer from his department? Has he completely lost hold or is he shielding someone?”Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said, “When the State is staring at a loss of ₹30,000 crore, the Agriculture Department’s claim to having no information is a shameful thing.”last_img read more

No saffron, it’s a contest between CPM, NCP in Kalwan reserved seat

first_imgUnlike other parts of the State, the saffron colour is conspicuous by its absence in Kalwan with flags and posters of only two political parties visible. The contest in Kalwan in Nashik district is not between Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combines. Instead, it is a fight between the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) and the NCP.In 2014, J.P. Gavit of the CPM won the Assembly elections beating a senior leader Arjun Pawar of the NCP by a slender margin of 4,700 votes. “The real fight here is between the CPM and the NCP. The Shiv Sena candidate is practically on the side of the NCP candidate,” Mr. Gavit said. After the demise of Arjun Pawar two years ago, the NCP has fielded his son Rohit for the upcoming elections. “In the last five years Mr. Gavit has been unable to address the issues of the region,” Rohit Pawar said. Mr. Gavit however has criticised the NCP for putting up a candidate against him despite an alliance with it in the State. “NCP as a party has been very devious. First they announce the alliance and then they field a candidate against me, a sitting MLA,” he said.On the ground, people feel that the election would be a close contest. “Each has their sphere of influence, while Mr. Pawar has a hold on Kalwan, Mr. Gavit has his base in Surgana. Mr. Pawar’s father’s goodwill will help him as well. But the margins will be very narrow,” said Devanang Chavan, who teaches in a college in Kalwan. Anil Gangurde, a daily wage farm labourer, said among the key issues is the daily wage rate which has dropped in recent months. “Earlier I used to get around ₹400 per day, now it is around ₹300,” he said.Mr. Chavan said that connectivity and roads were also major issues in the region as both Kalwan and Surgana talukas grapple with a lack of transport options. The constituency, with around 2.41 lakh votes, is reserved for scheduled tribes (ST) as the majority population living in both talukas belong to tribal communities. Mr. Gavit said a big fear among the residents was the State government’s plan to divert water from west flowing rivers to areas in the east like Marathwada. “If any Adivasi is affected due to this project, it will never see the light of day,” he said.last_img read more

IPL 2011: Trends and traits of auction

first_imgMoney flowed like the water of a flooded river in Bangalore on Saturday as top players in international cricket were bought by the 10 franchisees of the Indian Premier League. The amount splurged in the 2011 auction trumped the millions spent in the inaugural sale in 2008.If $1.55 million (Rs 7.13 crore) was the biggest amount spent till last season – on Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff – the fourth edition of the league kicked off with franchisees spending over $2 million (Rs 9.2 crore) on players like Gautam Gambhir ($2.4 mn; Rs11.04 cr), Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan ($2.1 mn; Rs 9.66 cr).A player like Andrew Symonds commanded $1.35 million earlier (Rs 6.21 crore at current rate), but the trend this time around is clear – if you have to splurge, splurge on the Indian players. What emerged from the auction on Saturday is that the team owners have become smarter. It’s not that they didn’t make sound business decisions earlier or that the deals struck for the new season were reasonable. But if one is allowed to spend up to $9 mn (Rs 41.4 crore), it makes sense to spend one’s millions on Indian stars than on international ones. There are a few reasons behind it. Firstly, the Indian team is one of the top sides in world cricket right now and most of the players are in red hot form. And more importantly, they will be available for the entire duration of the IPL, unlike players from England or the West Indies. The unavailability of foreign players in previous editions hurt the franchisees, who paid them huge sums but couldn’t play them for a large number of games. The team owners have become wiser and have taken the availability of foreign players into account while deciding on their buys.advertisementIt is for that reason that the top seven most expensive players are Indians and the highest amount commanded by a foreign players is $1.5 million (Rs6.9 cr) – for Mahela Jayawardene by Kochi. What the teams have learnt is that irrespective of the quality of the international players, it will be the Indian stars who will form the backbone of the sides. They are the ones who will attract most of the crowds and will be most sought after.Another trend that was visible is the loss in market value of the Australian players. With the aura surrounding the players from Down Under fast diminishing with a string of defeats over the past year, the Aussies are not so much in demand. However, the stock of the English players hasn’t risen correspondingly. It has, however, gotten more to do with the uncertainty over their availability. In the inaugural auction, a lot of money was spent on international players who did well in their domestic T20 tournaments. But this time, the moolah has been splurged only on proven international performers as the franchises would rather take chances with unknown local talent. But the fact remains that unheard of amounts have been spent on players for a one-anda- half month tournament. Even in this apparent madness, there is a method. And the method is to back the Indians.IPL 4 teams till now:KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS Previous squad Sourav Ganguly; Ajit Agarkar; Shane Bond; Ashok Dinda; Chris Gayle; Brad Hodge; Murali Kartik; Brendon McCullum; Angelo Mathews; Ajantha Mendis; Cheteshwar Pujara; Wriddhiman Saha; Owais Shah; Ishant SharmaCurrent squadGautam Gambhir (Rs 11.04 cr), Yusuf Pathan (Rs 9.66 cr), Jacques Kallis (Rs 5.06cr), Brad Haddin (Rs 1.49), Shakeeb Al Hasan (Rs 1.95cr); Brett Lee (Rs 1.84cr); Eoin Morgan (Rs 1.61 cr); Manoj Tiwary (Rs 2.18cr)ROYAL CHALLENGERs  BANGALOREPrevious squad Anil Kumble; Mark Boucher; Rahul Dravid; Dillon du Preez; Shreevats Goswami; Jacques Kallis; Virat Kohli; Praveen Kumar; Abhimanyu Mithun; Kevin PieteRs en; Steven Smith; Dale Steyn; Ross Taylor; RobinCurrent squad Tillakaratne Dilshan (Rs 2.99 cr), Zaheer Khan (Rs 4.14 cr), AB de VillieRs  (Rs 5.06 cr), Daniel Vettori (Rs 2.53 cr), Saurabh Tiwary (Rs 7.36 cr); Dirk Nannes (Rs 2.99 cr); Cheteshwar Pujara (Rs 3.22 cr); Virat Kohli (retained)RAJASTHAN ROYALSPrevious squad Shane Warne; Swapnil Asnodkar; Johan Botha; Abhishek Jhunjhunwala; Kamran Khan; Michael Lumb; Morne Morkel; Naman Ojha; Munaf Patel; Yusuf Pathan; Shaun Tait; Siddharth Trivedi; Adam Voges; Graeme Smith Uthappa; Cameron WhiteCurrent squad Ross Taylor (Rs 2.6 cr), Rahul Dravid (Rs 2.3 cr), Johan Botha (Rs 4.37 cr); Paul Collingwood (Rs 1.15 cr); Shane Warne (retained); Shane Watson (retained)MUMBAI INDIANSPrevious squad Sachin Tendulkar; Dwayne Bravo; Shikhar Dhawan; JP Duminy; Dilhara Fernando; Harbhajan Singh; Zaheer Khan; Dhawal Kulkarni; Lasith Malinga; Ali Murtaza; Abhishek Nayar; Kieron Pollard; Aditya Tare; Saurabh TiwaryCurrent squad Rohit Sharma (Rs 9.2 cr), Andrew Symonds (Rs 3.91 cr), David Jacobs (Rs 87 lakh), James Franklin (Rs 46 lakh); Sachin Tendulkar (retained); Harbhajan Singh (retained); Kieron Pollard (retained); Lasith Malinga (retained)advertisementDECCAN CHARGERSPrevious squad Adam Gilchrist; Anirudh Singh; Azhar Bilakhia; HeRs chelle Gibbs; Harmeet Singh; Ryan Harris; VVS Laxman; Mitchell MaRs h; Pragyan Ojha; Ravi Teja; Kemar Roach; Rohit Sharma; RP Singh; T Suman; Andrew SymondsCurrent squadKevin PieteRs en (Rs 2.99 cr), Cameron White (Rs 5.06 cr), Kumar Sangakkara (Rs 3.22 cr), JP Duminy (Rs 1.38 cr), Shikhar Dhawan (Rs 1.38 cr); Dale Steyn (Rs 5.52 cr); Amit Mishra (Rs 1.38 cr); Ishant Sharma (Rs 2.07 cr) Pragyan Ojha (Rs 2.3 cr)MUMBAI INDIANSPrevious squad Sachin Tendulkar; Dwayne Bravo; Shikhar Dhawan; JP Duminy; Dilhara Fernando; Harbhajan Singh; Zaheer Khan; Dhawal Kulkarni; Lasith Malinga; Ali Murtaza; Abhishek Nayar; Kieron Pollard; Aditya Tare; Saurabh TiwaryCurrent squad Rohit Sharma (Rs 9.2 cr), Andrew Symonds (Rs 3.91 cr), David Jacobs (Rs 87 lakh), James Franklin (Rs 46 lakh); Sachin Tendulkar (retained); Harbhajan Singhlast_img read more

This is how New York Post covered Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding

Yes, you read it right but that is not it. The article further reads:”Two jackasses got married in Italy Saturday.Sex-tape star Kim Kardashian, 33, wed egotist Kanye West, 36, in a wedding opulent enough for Florence’s Medici dynasty and tacky enough for reality TV.They were betrothed at Florence’s 16th-century Fort di Belvedere castle. Michael Jordan Hires Unknown Mike Dunlap To Coach Bobcats

Mike Dunlap, a little known but highly respected assistant coach with St. John’s, was hired Monday by Michael Jordan’s Charlotte Bobcats,   the school said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.Dunlap is a surprise hire because he has spent most of his career at the collegiate level, and was not mentioned as one of the leading candidates by Bobcat executives, who said the search was narrowed down to Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan, Indiana assistant Brian Shaw and Lakers assistant Quin Snyder. After initial interviews with Charlotte executives Rod Higgins and Rich Cho, Shaw and Snyder were brought in last week to interview with Bobcats owner Michael Jordan.Sloan pulled himself out of the running last week, and after meeting with Shaw and Snyder, Jordan decided to re-open the field and brought Dunlap back in for an interview on Monday, sources say. Impressed, Jordan offered Dunlap the job.Cho told ESPN.com’s Andy Katz on Monday night that “a strong emphasis in player development was extremely high on our priority list,” in response to the Dunlap hire. Dunlap is known as a teacher of the game amid his peers in college and in the NBA.Dunlap, who is known to favor an up-tempo style of play, will replace Paul Silas, whose contract was not renewed after Charlotte finished with the worst winning percentage in NBA history this past season. The Bobcats were 7-59. read more

115 feared dead in shipwreck off Libya coast

first_imgRescued migrants sit on the coast of Khoms, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Tripoli, on 26 July 2019. Photo: AFPAbout 115 people are missing and feared to have drowned and another 134 were rescued by Libyan coast guards and local fishermen after a wooden boat carrying migrants capsized off Libya, a Libyan navy official said on Thursday.Earlier, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said that up to 150 people were feared dead.”The worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year has just occurred,” UNHCR head Filippo Grandi said in a tweet. There were about 250 people on board, mainly from Eritrea and other sub-Saharan Africa and Arab countries, when the boat capsized off the coast near Komas, east of the capital Tripoli, Libyan navy spokesman Ayoub Qassem said.Libya is a hub for migrants and refugees, many of whom try to reach Europe in unseaworthy boats. The latest shipwreck takes the death toll of Mediterranean migrants to over 600 this year, putting 2019 on track to be the sixth year in a row with more than 1,000 deaths, UNHCR spokesman Charlie Yaxley said.”Until we address the reasons why people take these dangerous boat journeys, sadly, this is unlikely to be the last tragedy like this that we see,” he said.Yaxley said survivors of the wreck were likely to be brought to two detention centres in Libya where they would face further risks, and he called for their immediate release.Rescued migrants sit on the coast of Khoms, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Tripoli, on 26 July 2019. Photo: AFP”We know that inside these detention centres there’s insufficient food, water, often unsanitary conditions, there have been widespread reports of human rights violations taking place,” he said.Libya says the migrants are illegally entering and leaving the country. It regularly detains them in centres that the UN says are effectively jails, exposing them to the added risk of being caught up in the country’s civil war.One detention centre in Tripoli was hit by an air strike earlier this month, killing more than 50 people. UNHCR subsequently said it had been closed, but rescued migrants have continued to be sent there.Human rights activists have accused politicians in the European Union of turning a blind eye and letting people die rather than risk a voter backlash by appearing soft on immigration. Europe struggled to cope with an influx of more than one million refugees and migrants in 2015.Italy, many African migrants’ intended first destination, has taken a tough line since a populist government took office in 2018, and immediately sought to close the nation’s ports to rescued migrants.last_img read more
