All Stars captains announced

first_imgTouch Football Australia (TFA) is pleased to announce the captains of the All Stars teams that will play next Friday, 13 February at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast.   Touch Football will feature prominently in the overall event program for the first time in 2015; featuring some of Australia’s best players comprising a TFA All Stars Mixed team set to play an Indigenous All Stars Mixed team as a curtain-raiser to the Rugby League match.Australian Mixed Open captain, Kylie Hilder will captain the TFA All Stars team, while Australian representatives, Trent Touma (Mixed) and Marikki Watego (Women’s) will co-captain the Indigenous All Stars team. TFA All Star coach, Micheal Lovett said that Hilder was an easy selection based on the work they’ve done together at an Australian level over the past cycle as coach and captain of the Australian Mixed Open team respectively. “She is a very good leader of males and females and younger up-and-coming players, as well as the more experienced players,” Lovett said. “She is getting towards the twilight of her career but doesn’t leave anything to chance. She is well prepared fitness-wise, she works on always improving and sets a good on-field example like at last year’s National Touch League where she guided the young New South Wales Scorpions team to the Elite Eight Women’s title.”“She is very passionate about where she has come from in her Touch Football career and always remembers who has helped her get to where she is. She is proud of the Australian crest she wears and instils that into her fellow athletes.”Hilder says that being named captain of the All Stars team is a great honour and that she cannot wait until next week’s game. “To be part of this inaugural Touch Football All Stars game is amazing. Just to be selected to play with some of the best talent currently in the game is overwhelming but then to get named as captain and lead this talent has made me speechless,” Hilder said.“Being named as a captain of any team is one of the greatest honours any athlete can receive and for me being named as the first captain of the NRL All Stars Touch Football side means so much to me and will be something I will never ever forget and a highlight of my career.”Indigenous All Stars coach, Phil Gyemore said that Touma and Watego were ‘both proud indigenous players who have progressed through the Touch Football High Performance program and into the Open teams’. “They are both really strong chances of playing in the 2015 World Cup in Coffs Harbour and all players, not just Indigenous players, should be trying to follow in the footsteps of these young aspiring Touch Football players that would like to represent their country on home soil. They will be great leaders for the Indigenous All Stars team and are fully aware of the honour and what it means to lead this young but exciting Touch Football team on the Gold Coast.”Watego says she is ‘extremely excited’ to be named in the side and ‘truly humbled’ to be named co-captain. “Being fortunate enough to hold a position in this highly coveted team is something that I will never forget.  It’s such a great honour and privilege to be selected to represent the Indigenous community whilst playing the sport I love. I really hope that this initiative will inspire both young Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Touch Footy players to get involved and pursue Touch be it socially or competitively.”“To me, there is no higher honour than representing your family and your people in the wider community and I know my co-captain Trent, my team mates and I will cherish this opportunity.”“It would be great to see this game become a permanent fixture in the Touch Football and NRL calendar! I just can’t wait to go into camp next week and prepare for what should be an exciting game of Touch Footy!”Touma says that the game will be one of the biggest honours of his sporting career. “To be noticed by selectors to represent the Indigenous All Star team and also my people is one of the biggest honours in my sporting career. The day I received a phone call from I could not answer with a big yes quick enough,” Touma said.  “On top of being selected in this great team I was this week announced as captain alongside Marikki, a great talent in the game today. Being proud enough to represent my people but also captain this team will stay with me for a lifetime.” The game will be played at 3.00pm on Friday, 13 February. Duke Using Avery Johnson “Standard” Quote For Marketing Purposes

first_imgAvery johnsons smiles at alabama podium.avery johnson alabamaFormer NBA point guard and head coach Avery Johnson was recently hired to take over the reins of the Alabama basketball program, which has reached just one NCAA Tournament in the past nine seasons. Johnson has a tall task ahead of him, but he has lofty goals for his new squad, saying during his introductory press conference his program will try and live up to the standard set by Duke, the 2014-15 national champions. “Duke University, that’s the standard for us here at the University of Alabama and our basketball program,” Johnson said. “The way they play defense and offense. The way they move the ball, that’s the standard. Nobody else is the standard. That’s the standard. Duke University. That’s why I’m here.”If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, it also makes for good publicity in this case. Judging by its Instagram post this morning, the Duke program is using Johnson’s quote to its marketing advantage. An obvious, but savvy move by Duke. We’re sure Johnson isn’t the only coach looking to get his program on the level of the Blue Devils but it’s easier said than done.last_img read more

Pink polling stations to be set up in Gurugram to boost women

first_imgGurugram: Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri at a Press conference to discuss preparations for Lok Sabha elections said that pink polling station will be set up to boost the number of women voters. At 10,82,870 for the first time, Gurugram district will have more than a million citizens who will be eligible to cast their vote in the upcoming General as well as assembly elections. In the given set, there will be 5,12,506 women and 5,70,364 men voters. Also Read – Gurdwara Bangla Sahib bans single use plasticThe figure has seen a rise from 9,36,471 voters who had voted in 2014 elections. The rise in the number of voters can be gauged from the fact that in just one year 27,689 voters have been added. The sex ratio figures in terms of voting were however not satisfactory in 2014 with 899 females to 1,000 males recorded in 2014 General Elections. The Deputy Commissioner affirmed that this time steps were taken by the administration to ensure that the percentage of voters would be much higher than in the previous elections. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder”Our basic priority this time is to ensure that there is a high turnout of women voters. Not only are we going to make sure that they will be provided with more security, we are also exploring other ways by which they can come in huge numbers and exercise their democratic right,” said Amit Khatri. Providing more information, Khatri mentioned that a total of 1,113 booths will be set up at 532 locations. Around 15,000 people, including security personnel, will be involved in ensuring voting proceeds smoothly. “Gurugram district has always voted proactively. In the last General elections, the voting percentage was over 70. We would want this healthy trend to continue. In the coming days, we will be providing facilities by enhancing the communication channels. If the voter wants any of the doubts cleared, he can call at the toll-free number 1950,” said the deputy commissioner who took the charge of Gurugram only in February. The significance of Gurugram can be gauged from the fact that it is the largest Lok Sabha seat in Haryana.last_img read more

Lance Stephenson Takes Less to Sign With Hornets After

Lance Stephenson, who blew into LeBron James’ ear during a playoff game, drawing criticism from around the NBA, blew $17 million by signing with the Charlotte Hornets instead of re-signing with the Indiana Pacers.Stephenson apparently considered the Pacers’ five-year, $44 million offer an insult and instead signed on with the Hornets for a deal worth $27 million, according to league sources. The mercurial swingman met with Hornets owner Michael Jordan, general manager Rich Cho, head coach Steve Clifford and associate head coach Patrick Ewing on Tuesday night in Las Vegas. The move ends Stephenson’s productive yet controversial time in Indiana.Stephenson, who led the league in triple-doubles, felt the Pacers’ offer was “low ball.” The Charlotte contract pays him $200,000 more per year, but the overall value is much lower than what Indiana offered him. At the end of the day, he left $17 million in guaranteed money on the table. There is a chance this could end up being a smart move for Stephenson. He will be just 26 when his contract with the Hornets is up in the summer of 2017. With the salary cap set to skyrocket in the wake of the league’s new TV rights deals, Stephenson could be well positioned to cash in if he continues to grow as a player.“Reports throughout the negotiation process with Indiana have often strayed from the truth, but suffice it to say that it was less about the money,” Stephenson’s agent Alberto Ebanks said in a statement. “Lance will miss the city, the team and the mentor who helped transform him into the dynamic player he has become. He looks forward to making a strong contribution and beginning a new chapter with the Charlotte Hornets. … While we tried our best to come to the best possible terms for both sides, there was not sufficient flexibility in the terms of the contract, particularly the length of the contract.”The Pacers were unwilling to offer Stephenson a shorter deal, spanning two or three years, sources said. Indiana was also unwilling to increase its offer.Stephenson, who challenged James in the regular season and fought with teammate Evan Turner in practice, would have signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks for $20 million had the Houston Rockets matched the Mavs’ offer to Chandler Parsons. But the Rockets let Parsons go, opening the way for Jordan and the Hornets.Like many teams, the Hornets, while fans of Stephenson’s play, had concerns about his antics and attitude. But sources say those concerns were alleviated in Tuesday’s face-to-face meeting. read more

Columbus Clippers win 6of8 in opening homestand

The Columbus Clippers secured their fifth come-from-behind win of the young season with a 5-4 victory against the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday, in the last game of an eight-game homestand to start the year. The Clippers (6-2) gained plenty of experience in tight contests during the homestand as close games and come-from-behind victories were present throughout. All eight games were decided by three runs or less and five of the eight were one-run games. Columbus manager Mike Sarbaugh said he is proud of the way his team has hung tough in tight situations early in the year. “We have confidence as a club in our ability to score runs,” he said. “We’ve showed early in the season we can come back, score some runs and win games.” Clippers shortstop Gregorio Petit said his team is made up of resilient competitors. “We just battle the whole game and never give up,” Petit said after the Clippers 4-3 walk-off win against Indianapolis Monday. “Fighters fight, and that’s how we are.” In the win Thursday, Columbus found itself trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, taking a significant punch from Indianapolis in the top half of the inning. The Indians scored three runs on a 3-run home run by shortstop Jordy Mercer to take the lead. Using three consecutive hits to start the inning, the Clippers tied the game at four with an RBI single by center fielder Ezequiel Carrera. Third baseman Russ Canzler gave Columbus the lead with an RBI single of his own, the team’s sixth hit of the inning. “I thought that was the key in the game for us,” Sarbaugh said. “Coming out that next inning and scoring three was big.” Scoring the tying run in the fifth inning was Clippers right fielder Chad Huffman. Huffman went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs and a RBI on a home run hit into the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center field. “I got a change-up up in the zone and I was lucky I got the barrel on it,” Huffman said. Clippers starting pitcher Corey Kluber struck out eight in five innings allowing four runs on three hits. Kluber has a combined 18 strikeouts in his first two starts. Columbus begins an 11-game road trip Friday against Louisville, and the team’s confidence is riding high after the successful homestand. “There’s lots of confidence in this locker room,” Huffman said. “Our expectations are to go in there and win all 11 of them.” read more

Commentary Keep potential Big Ten name changes simple

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said the conference is considering changing the names of its Leaders and Legends divisions beginning in 2014, according to ESPN.com. For the majority of Big Ten fans, including myself, this comes as a relief, and we collectively say, “Thank goodness.” According to a Monday ESPN article, the decision to change the division names could be made as early as June, a little more than a year before Maryland and Rutgers leave the ACC and Big East, respectively, to increase the total number of schools the Big Ten houses to 14. It seems college football will soon be comprised of four super conferences, which I am not a fan of. With that being the case, I hope Delany and his colleagues see this expansion as a second chance to get this naming thing right. Two years ago - when the conference added Nebraska – they introduced a new logo and split the teams into the Leaders and Legends divisions. After I initially heard this news, I could not help but scratch my head. Originally I thought maybe the conference was just trying to promote how its members mold its student athletes to be leaders in whatever they choose to do after they leave school. Maybe their intentions were to honor such legends as Archie Griffin, Bo Schembechler and Bob Knight, who each helped make the history of the conference excellent. Then I thought about it again and found the new names to be too different to be likable for the common fan like myself. It is no secret that there are plenty of fans across the Midwest who do not care for how the divisions are named. It seems like Delany understands that, even though he said in the ESPN article that he was a “little surprised” about the responses that came when the names were released in 2010. “I’m not sure it was a national survey (of people who didn’t like the names),” Delany told ESPN. “I don’t take umbrage to negative reaction.” To me that means he knows fans currently are not supportive of how the divisions are named, but he knows no matter what is ultimately decided upon, not everyone is going to be happy. For that, I agree with the conference’s commissioner, but offer this bit of advice: Just keep it simple. Conferences like the SEC, MAC and even Conference USA call their divisions East and West. The Pac-12 has a North Division and a South Division, and the ACC dubs its divisions Atlantic and Coastal. I understand that the names mentioned above are easy to select due to geographic location within the boundaries of the conference, but I wonder why something similar in the Big Te cannot be done. Theoretically, all schools that lie west of the Indiana and Illinois border could become members of a West Division. With the addition of Purdue to that side, this would leave seven members (Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers) to create an East Division, and keep many of the traditional rivalries within the conference. Keep in mind the Big Ten could be looking to expand even more, with the potential of adding two more teams to bring the conference’s total to 16. If that does happen, having the names of East and West atop the divisions should have little to no impact on which division the new members join. As long as Delany is seriously considering the change, then even if it fails, Big Ten supporters can be happy. It appears he knows how the bulk of them feel and understands what is right in front of him. “We have the opportunity to look at divisional structure, branding, rivalries and geography all again,” he said. “Depending on what we do will probably influence exactly how we brand it.” Geography makes the most sense in my mind, but that is why guys like Jim Delany get paid the big bucks and students like me do not. read more

Huawei open to selling its 5G chips to Apple says report

first_img $999 Best Buy Boost Mobile Aug 31 • Your phone screen is gross. Here’s how to clean it Aug 31 • iPhone XR vs. iPhone 8 Plus: Which iPhone should you buy? Huawei’s foldable Mate X phone uses the company’s in-house Balong 5000 5G modem chip. Andrew Hoyle/CNET The future of 5G on the iPhone is getting messy.Starting in 2016, Apple used chips from both Intel and Qualcomm to power its iPhone’s modem, connecting it to 4G cellular networks. But in 2018, the company switched entirely to Intel’s wireless chips for its $999 iPhone XS, $1,099 iPhone XS Max and $749 iPhone XR. And it’s believed the next iPhone will also use only Intel chips as well. That’s led to speculation the iPhone won’t be able to offer new 5G wireless technology until at least 2020. In the meantime, Apple and Qualcomm are battling in court over patent licensing, with the latest trial scheduled for next week in San Diego. While that court battle continues, it’s unlikely Qualcomm will supply 5G chips for iPhones anytime soon. While that drama plays out, the Chinese tech giant Huawei says it has a solution for Apple. The company said it’s “open” to selling its own 5G Balong 5000 chipsets to Apple, Engadget reported on Monday, citing an unnamed “source with knowledge of the situation.” Huawei declined to comment. Apple didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. While Huawei may offer an alternative with its 5G modem, which is used in the Mate X phone, the company reportedly sells almost none of its wireless chips to other device makers because of national security concerns.Lawmakers in Washington consider Huawei a security threat, in part because of its close link with the Chinese government. As a result, federal agencies are banned from using the company’s products. The US has also encouraged other countries not to use Huawei tech with their 5G networks. As a result, Huawei devices are hard to come by in the US, despite it being one of the top phone makers in the world. For Apple, though, the lack of 5G wireless technology could be a liability. I expect it to be down around 10-15% when markets open as their business has been significantly affected,” said Arun Kejriwal, founder of independent advisory firm Kejriwal Research. The company’s ability to raise funds has been substantially impaired and the business has been brought to a standstill with there being minimal/virtually no disbursements, DHFL said in the note accompanying the results.”The most concerning thing in the result is that increased provisioning amount of 32.8 billion rupees ($478.5 million), which has suddenly come up in Q4FY19,” said Hemindra Hazari, an independent banking analyst, adding this implies either a sudden asset deterioration or that stressed assets are finally getting recognised.”This is not a great sign,” said Hazari.DHFL’s results are the latest sign of growing stress in India’s finance sectors as state-owned banks grapple with bad debts and a recent liquidity crunch in the shadow banking industry. This, in turn, has hurt economic growth, which in the March quarter fell to its lowest level in more than four years, presenting a challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently won a second term in office.RESTRUCTURING PLAN DHFL has said it is talking to bankers and other lenders on restructuring its borrowings and is in discussions to sell its retail and wholesale portfolio. The company will submit a resolution plan shortly, which may include extending the tenure of loans, converting debt into equity, seeking additional working capital and inducting a new management team and financial investors, sources who attended a meeting with its lenders on Thursday told Reuters.”We are in constant touch with the DHFL management and we’re confident that a resolution plan can be worked out in the coming days,” said one of the bankers involved in the recovery process, requesting anonymity.Still, investors say the company’s dire warnings about its financial situation raising doubts around the “ability of the company to continue as a going concern,” will remain in focus when markets open on Monday.”The losses are not surprising but the quantum is definitely surprising,” SP Tulsian, an independent investment adviser told television channel CNBC TV18.”I don’t accept these arguments about the company finding a solution in the next couple of months as that seems unlikely,” he said, noting that DHFL’s management has been trying to sell assets for the last four to six months.last_img read more

Tencent in Talks to Buy 10 of Universal Music Group

first_img Universal Music Refutes Claims of Last Artist in Lawsuit Over 2008 Fire, Requests Dismissal Tencent is known primarily for its gaming and social network business — it owns China’s powerful WeChat platform, which has 900 million daily users. But the company also has its own music unit, Tencent Music Entertainment Group, which raised more than $1 billion in an IPO late last year that valued the division overall at $21.3 billion. Tencent also holds a 7.5% equity stake in streaming giant Spotify, the result of a share swap in December 2017, making it one of the Swedish company’s biggest shareholders.Vivendi and Tencent are already familiar interlocutors. In 2017, UMG and Tencent Music struck a multi-year agreement making the latter a distributor of UMG music in China on its QQ Music, KuGou and Kuwo streaming platforms. Tencent Music also has exclusive rights to sub-license UMG’s content in the Middle Kingdom. In a letter to staff, Lucian Grainge, the CEO and chairman of UMG, hailed the talks with Tencent.“This is an exciting development for both Vivendi and UMG and affirms once again just how much our strategy and hard work are succeeding,” Grainge wrote. “As Vivendi discussed last week with its investors, we continue to deliver remarkable, record-setting results. Our success is driven by placing our recording artists and songwriters at the center of everything we do and providing them with the industry’s best creative and commercial resources on a global basis.“Obviously, we remain part of the Vivendi family – today’s announcement is about a minority investment by Tencent. I can assure you that Vivendi’s Supervisory and Management Boards as well as the Bolloré family continue to be steadfast supporters of our strategy, our work and our teams. And it goes without saying, that our commitment to recording artists and songwriters will continue unchanged.”Tencent had long been rumored to be one of the suitors for a stake in UMG after Vivendi announced a year ago its intention to sell up to 50% of the company. The French media giant ruled out an IPO as an option. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. UMG has also been hit by a controversy over a fire in 2008 that is estimated to have wiped out 500,000 master recordings in the company’s massive archive. An insider with knowledge of the sale process told Variety that a deal with Tencent would be strategic because China is primed to become the world’s biggest music market. At the same time, however, the potential deal is also supposed to encourage other investors to get involved in order to keep a Chinese company from gaining too much control of UMG, he said.In June, Yannick Bollore, chairman of Vivendi’s supervisory board, said that the company was “not in a hurry” and “very confident” it would find the right partner to purchase up to 50% of UMG. He cited the music industry’s “huge growth” as a pace Vivendi wants to maintain in the coming years. In its latest quarterly financial results, Vivendi reported that its revenues were up nearly 20% to $3.7 billion during the first six months of 2019.Shirley Halperin and Elsa Keslassy contributed to this report. Chinese digital giant Tencent has entered negotiations with French media conglomerate Vivendi to buy a 10% stake in Universal Music Group.Vivendi announced the talks Tuesday, saying that the negotiations were based on a valuation of UMG of €30 billion ($33.6 billion). Tencent’s potential 10% stake would therefore cost €3 billion ($3.36 billion). The deal would give Tencent a one-year option to purchase another 10% stake on the same terms.Vivendi said the two companies were also exploring other areas of “strategic commercial cooperation” that would help grow UMG, the world’s biggest music company with market share of more than 30% in 2018, through new digital initiatives and territories. In addition, Vivendi is continuing to seek other buyers interested in a stake in its extremely lucrative music unit, which boasts a glittering roster of superstars such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, as well as divisions dedicated to publishing, merchandise and other sectors.last_img read more
