Adventure Playgrounds Put Kids In Charge Of How They Play And Create

first_img Listen To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: The Parish SchoolChildren play at the adventure playground at The Parish School in the Spring Branch area of Houston. Xcenter_img Share The term adventure playground might be an unfamiliar one for most Americans, considering that there are only six active playgrounds of this type in the United States, including one in Houston.Adventure playgrounds are part of a practice known as playwork, which has roots in the United Kingdom and aims to give children freedom and self-direction over the way that they play. While a typical playground you might see at a school has equipment designed for specific uses — like a swing set or a seesaw — adventure playgrounds are designed to be as free form as possible. They will instead have loose parts, structures, tools, and supplies with no specific purpose in mind. The kids get to decide what to do with it all. And educators simply help facilitate those plans and inspect the materials for safety.Bayou City PlayA boy poses with the robot he made out of various materials at a Bayou City Play event in 2017.One such adventure playground can be found at The Parish School in the Spring Branch neighborhood of Houston. Horsetrading allegations Yadav comes in defence of Kejriwal

first_imgCalling as “sting-fest” emergence of certain audio clips purportedly featuring Kejriwal’s voice, Yadav said “innocuous conversations” were being presented as stings to “discredit” AAP.”One incident is being used to discredit the entire movement. Now innocuous conversations are also being presented as stings. Big accusations are flying sans any evidence. The media is happy to dish it all with a glee,” a post on his Facebook page said.”Whatever our internal differences, no one from this movement can possibly enjoy let alone join this mudslinging. All of us must join hands to preserve the organisationl unity and ethical integrity of this movement,” it added. How a Green Thumb Is Helping This Entrepreneur Earn Greenbacks

first_img Not long after planting her first vegetable garden, Kristee Rosendahl realized she was spending most of her time indoors researching gardening topics, not actually digging in the dirt. “I had a stack of gardening books a mile high, but it wasn’t helping me figure out what was best for my garden,” she recalls. Her need for a hyperlocal resource led Rosendahl, a user-experience designer at Apple, to develop Smart Gardener, an online tool for planning and managing one’s vegetable patch. Users enter their ZIP code, garden size and household size, and the program aggregates historical weather statistics from a national database to make recommendations for the best vegetables for the climate and when to plant. It also provides a week-to-week guide for maintaining one’s garden through the growing season. For example, gardeners who want to plant tomatoes will receive recommendations about which varieties will produce the best results in their area; data can be narrowed further, limiting suggestions to, say, heirloom varieties or those that perform well in containers or partial shade. After testing the program in her garden in Sonoma County, Calif., Rosendahl recognized its potential as a business. “There was so much buzz about sustainability and local food systems, and technology was getting much more sophisticated,” she explains. She decided to release Smart Gardener as a free service. Her hope? To build a robust audience as proof of concept, then figure out how to monetize. Since she launched in 2012, more than 250,000 people have created accounts at smartgardener.com, making it the leading U.S. gardening website. Armed with that user base, Rosendahl has introduced small add-ons and apps, ranging in price from $0.99 to $4.99, that include a guide to growing berries and a harvest calculator. The site has also partnered with seed companies and retailers, including Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, to generate revenue from affiliate e-commerce sales. Although she declined to disclose revenue, Rosendahl estimates that 25 percent of users purchase add-ons or products from Smart Gardener’s partners.Smart Garden PlanImage credit: www.smartgardener.comLast year Rosendahl created a B2B product, Smart Backyard, designed to help landscapers use the technology to help with garden planning and maintenance and improve customer communication. For example, after a landscaper has completed a list of recommended chores, an auto-generated newsletter is emailed to clients. With demand for Smart Gardener and Smart Backyard continuing to grow, Rosendahl believes she can expand her empire beyond the garden in the coming years. Among her plans are complementary services such as Smart Chickens, Smart Beekeeping and Smart Orchardist. “We want to be part of the whole smart-home movement,” she says. “Smart Gardener is the first step.” 3 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals March 9, 2015 This story appears in the March 2015 issue of Entrepreneur. AKQA a global innovation agency introduces Speedgate an AIdesigned outdoor sport

first_imgEarlier this month, AKQA, a global innovation agency, introduced a new outdoor sport called Speedgate, which is created by an AI system built by them. This AI system was trained on more than 400 sports including Rugby, Soccer, and football to form the rules and regulations for Speedgate. In Speedgate, each team has six players consisting of forwards and defenders. The teams playing the game have to score goals by kicking through two consecutive gates. When a player kicks the ball through an X gate, the center gate will unlock the goal gate. After the center gate is unlocked, the team in possession can score by kicking the ball through the end gate in any direction. Here’s a video showing how this game actually works: Developers at AKQA trained a recurrent neural network and a deep convolutional generative adversarial network on over 400 sports. It uses NVIDIA Tesla GPUs for training the neural networks as well as for inferencing. Additionally, the neural network was also trained on 10,400 logos to generate the official Speedgate logo. The model was able to generate over 1,000 different sport concepts. Though many of them were interesting, the team wanted the AI system to come up with a game that was in addition to being fun and easy to understand was also active and accessible. And, Speedgate checked all the boxes for them. Kathryn Webb, AI Practice Lead at AKQA, said, “GPU technology helped us to condense training and generation phases down to a fraction of what they would’ve been. We would not have been able to achieve so many unique ML contributions in the project without that speed. It gave us more time to test, learn and adapt, and ultimately helped to produce the best final result.” Read more in detail, visit AKQA’s official website.
