The original Silverlight shipped in Fall 2007 as Microsoft’s first programmable web browser plug-in. It’s a 4MB Flash/Flex competitor that runs on Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and mobile devices. While Flash definitely holds the market share for machine installs, according to Microsoft, “In less than nine months since its release, more than 1 in 3 Internet devices now have Silverlight 2 installed.” While this market penetration may seem high to some, the fact that Silverlight does not have widespread name recognition is perhaps a testament to the seamlessness of the service. In it’s third iteration, Silverlight 3 offers some interesting new features including the following improvements:1. Streaming Support: Silverlight changes and adapts the video quality of a media file based on available bandwidth and CPU conditions in order to deliver an optimized viewing experience. This provides support for live and on-demand true HD (720p+) streaming. Video giant Netflix first employed the platform in 2007 to power its instant viewing service. With the new streaming support, the only thing holding back HD video sites is their own limited catalogues. 2. Sketchflow: Expression Studio’s SketchFlow allows for rapid user interface prototyping. This means that concepts and projects can evolve seamlessly without the need for lengthy redesigns. Developers are also able to apply their sketches to a 3D plane and add animation and annotations to them. Designers and developers are reporting that Sketchflow cuts down mock up times significantly. 3. Out-of-browser Capabilities: Similar to Adobe’s AIR and Mozilla’s Prism, Silverlight enables applications to be placed in a restricted store on a users machine. Users are then provided a direct link to the application from their desktop or start menu. Silverlight also tests for a network connection and automatically syncs and stores files depending on that connection. This ensures point back up. One of Silverlight 3’s early projects is French-based Eeple’sBoard. The project was started by a 19-year-old computer science student and is a virtual cork board with pictures, posters and articles. As with a real cork board, messages and notes can be layered to produce a media collage. In this case, the media includes videos, blog posts and music files. A year ago, Silverlight’s penetration was 17%, today it’s at a third of all users. Compared to the 99% market penetration of Flash 9 and 86% penetration of Flash 10, this is extremely low. It will be interesting to see if Silverlight 3’s features will increase the rate of adoption. Partnerships will certainly play a key role in how the market is carved out in the years to come. As our reading habits become increasingly digital, many book-lovers are wondering how this will impact libraries’ ability to lend materials, particularly since many of the popular e-readers and e-booksellers have rather restrictive loan policies. And some publishers too have expressed their own concerns about e-book sharing, with one going so far as stating that if libraries start lending e-books, it could serve to “undo the entire market for e-book sales.” These questions and concerns over e-book lending are bringing attention to libraries’ services, a good thing I’d argue, as the role of libraries expands from “repository of printed books” to include other technological services (most importantly, perhaps, community access to Internet). So here’s some good news today for libraries, right on the heels of good news for publishers from holiday sales: digital distributor OverDrive reports today that e-book checkouts at libraries were up 200% in 2010 from the year before. Audiobook loans were also up, by 52%. Proof, perhaps, that you can lend e-books and not “undo the entire market for e-book sales.”The statistics come from the over 13,000 libraries, schools and retailers that use OverDrive’s digital distribution services. And according to these figures, more than one million new users signed on to access e-books and audiobooks via “virtual library branches”. Over 718 million titles were viewed in the company’s Web-based catalog and over 15 million digital titles were checked out.The most popular fiction title: Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The most popular nonfiction title: Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. These were the most popular titles for audiobook downloads as well.OverDrive says that it makes over 400,000 copyrighted e-books, audiobooks, music, and video titles available to libraries, which patrons are able to download to their phone, PC, or e-readers. Story Highlights This year’s beneficiaries are the Musgrave Girls’ Home, the Walker’s Place of Safety, the Marie Atkins Centre and the Union’s ‘Teach the Youth’ student-administered summer community programme. The Students’ Union of the University of Technology (UTech) is continuing its fight against violence through its annual fundraising Tag Drive, which is being held this year under the theme ‘Keep the Peace, Save our Streets’.Dubbed ‘a special campaign seeking to stop violence against women’, the Tag Drive, now in its 52nd year, is set to take the message across Jamaica, while collecting funds to benefit a number of charities.This year’s beneficiaries are the Musgrave Girls’ Home, the Walker’s Place of Safety, the Marie Atkins Centre and the Union’s ‘Teach the Youth’ student-administered summer community programme.Speaking to JIS News, Director of Community Services, Jerome Clarke, noted that this year’s focus is a continuation of the 2016/17 theme, ‘Cease the Silence, End the Violence’.Explaining the choice of beneficiaries, Mr. Clarke noted that the Musgrave Girls’ Home, which houses girls who have suffered abuse, aligns with this year’s theme.He explained that the assistance to the Walker’s Place of Safety began late last year when the Students’ Union hosted a treat for the wards prior to the fire that gutted the home in January. He pointed out that the students wanted to help in a tangible way, earmarking some of this year’s collections for the State-run institution.The Students’ Union, he said, is driven to have meaningful participation in community initiatives and will, this year, channel some of the funds raised into its own Teach the Youth three-week summer programme, administered and taught by UTech students in communities in close vicinity to the Papine area where the university is located.“We realise how impactful the programme has been on a number of students from these communities. There are a number of students from the programme now coming to UTech, actually being in the Union and participating in activities. So, we decided that we would put more money into Teach the Youth and try to get it bigger and better – perhaps we can go more weeks or expand the curriculum,” Mr. Clarke explained.Psychology lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies, Henry Lewis, who was the guest speaker at the Tag Drive launch, commended the students for the stance taken and encouraged them to transform the initiative into a sustained campaign.“It will involve advocacy, and this is what the Union wants to become – a union that… makes an impact,” he implored.Mr. Clarke, who is an executive life coach and training consultant, said that fighting for the rights of women and children is a worthy cause.He informed that studies show that globally, one in five women and girls under the age of 50 have reported experiencing physical and sexual violence from an intimate partner within a 12-month period.The figure is higher in the Caribbean, with 21 per cent women and girls, aged 15 and 40, reporting having experienced physical and sexual violence by an intimate partner within the first 12 months of the relationship.“Preventing violence against women requires all of us working together. We must increase advocacy and awareness. We must strengthen the partnership across the counties, across universities.We must empower women and girls to speak up for themselves,” Mr. Smith said.The Tag Drive week of activities includes a Corporate Drive on Friday (February 23), where students will be travelling on buses throughout the Corporate Area to solicit funds.On Saturday (February 24), the team will embark on the Rural Drive across Jamaica.
