Envoy insists Udayanga not involved in Noels death

Russia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alexander Karchava today insisted that Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, is not involved in the murder of a Sri Lankan employee at the Sri Lankan embassy in Russia.Karchava said that a Russian National was arrested over the crime and he is now serving a jail term. Udayanga Weeratunga, the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, who is being wanted for his involvement in arms sales to Ukrainian rebels, has reportedly brought Ranaweera to Russia in 2002 to work in his restaurant. Noel Ranaweera was killed in 2014 while serving at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Russia. The body of Noel Ranaweera, a resident of Welikadamulla was exhumed last year in Attanagalle following a court order. Later Ranaweera was employed as a translator at the Sri Lankan Embassy. The mother of Ranaweera, G.P. Josephine, had claimed that the death was suspicious and had requested an inquiry into the death.The Russian Foreign Ministry at the time of the death said the Sri Lankan Embassy worker was killed on the night of June 11 in 2014 in the Southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don during an argument with employees of a transport company.
