first_imgThe WWF — the World Wide Fun for Nature, not the confederacy of spandex-glad roid monsters — wears its green cred on its sleeves: they’re out to safe the world. How are they going to do that? By inconveniencing you with DRM, it seems: the WWF has just announced a new variant of PDF that can’t be printed out.The WWF describes their new PDF technology like this:AdChoices广告The WWF format is a PDF that cannot be printed out. It’s a simple way to avoid unnecessary printing. So here’s your chance to save trees and help the environment. Decide for yourself which documents don’t need printing out – then simply save them as WWF. SAVE AS WWF, SAVE A TREE. There’s a million reasons why this is a weird, weird announcement. For one, the entire point of PDFs is to preserve formatting so that you can print it out: it’s a format dedicated to maintaining fonts, alignments and allowing robust image placement, so that the document you send to someone is printed out in a predictable way on the other end.And is DRM the right way to go about saving the world? Sure, hacking a WWF file is probably trivial, but still, it’s the principle of the thing.Perhaps we’re overthinking it, though. Since the file format shares its creators acronym, we suspect this is just a promotional announcement. Still, time to add *.WWF attachments to my email blacklist.Read more at WWFlast_img
