The new single-family house was designed as a separate residential unit and can hold its own next to the existing building from the 80s. It is situated on a partly raised plateau in the south-eastern part of the property. The two buildings differ in their roof design and thus emphasize their autonomy. At the same time, the new building paraphrases the existing building’s design: by its polygonal ground plan, which follows the hill’s shape, and expressive cantilevered floors. Wood was used a material to contrast the rather heavy sand-lime brick of the existing structure. Hierarchically, the new building is supposed to subordinate to the existing building and is therefore set slightly to the rear of the site. The new structure appears like a pavilion and, thanks to the flat roof, has a large accessible roof terrace that expands the small plot effectively. The greening of the roofs is intended to give the new building an animated character and link it with nature and the hill.Save this picture!SectionThe entrance / access is from Titlisstrasse, past the existing building. Between the two buildings is a greened pergola that acts like a buffer zone and brings daylight into the buildings. At the same time, it serves as an entrance zone for the new building. The space allocation plan in the new structure comprises living rooms / bedrooms and a kitchen / bathroom each on the ground floor, and a living room on the first floor with a spacious roof terrace and greened roof; the basement contains a guestroom with direct garden access, sauna area as well as a cellar and a laundry room.Save this picture!© Simon MengesSave this picture!Upper Floor PlanSave this picture!© Simon MengesThe dual materiality of the structure (above ground in wood / basement in concrete) is mirrored on the inside by wood ceilings on the ground floor and 1st floor as well as an exposed concrete ceiling in the basement. The walls painted in neutral white mediate between the materials. Save this picture!© Simon MengesThe large-scale glazing in the south and west creates a connection with nature. Circumferential canopies integrate the sun protection and underline the number of storeys; on the ground floor, the cantilevered canopy becomes a carport. The vertical inverted formwork of pre-greyed larch contrasts with the horizontal ceilings and provides the closed facade with plasticity and an exciting play of light and shadows.Save this picture!© Simon MengesProject gallerySee allShow lessSchauman & Nordgren Architects’ Winning Masterplan Envisages New Harbour Front Ident…Unbuilt ProjectMercedes-Benz Museum / UNStudioSelected Projects Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/805989/house-m-jan-skuratowski-architecture Clipboard “COPY” ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/805989/house-m-jan-skuratowski-architecture Clipboard “COPY” CopyHouses•Möhlin, Switzerland Photographs:  Simon Menges Manufacturers Brands with products used in this architecture project center_img Photographs House M / Jan Skuratowski ArchitectureSave this projectSaveHouse M / Jan Skuratowski Architecture Area:  217 m² Year Completion year of this architecture project Projects Switzerland CopyAbout this officeJan Skuratowski ArchitectureOfficeFollowProductsWoodSteelConcrete#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesMöhlinSwitzerlandPublished on February 24, 2017Cite: “House M / Jan Skuratowski Architecture” 24 Feb 2017. IRFU say snack advertising is in bad taste

first_imgEmail Blatant attempt by food distributors to capitalise on popularity of rugby The Irish Rugby Football Union has made contact, through its solicitors, with Largo Foods, the distributors of Hunky Dorys, and requested that they immediately withdraw the current advertising campaign, the strap line for which claims Hunky Dorys to be ‘Proud Sponsors of Irish Rugby’. Padraig Power, Commercial and Marketing Director, IRFU, stated: “This advertising campaign is in very bad taste and one which the IRFU would not want to be associated with in any way”.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up “Firstly, its blatant exploitation of women is tasteless and base, and quite simply unacceptable. Irish Rugby has a strong family focus and would not tolerate any connection with such an approach”. The campaign imagery launched by Hunk Dory’s urges “fans to get behind their team”, to “join in and get dirty” and uses phrases such as “Scrum – ptious” and “get to know the girls” in the locker room.  Mr Power added; “Secondly, the claim that the product is a ‘Proud Sponsor of Irish Rugby’ implies that the company is a significant sponsor of the game in this country, though the IRFU. This is absolutely untrue and a cynical ploy in an attempt to capitalise on the games popularity. By doing so it has the potential to undermine the legitimate claims of the many genuine sponsors and supporters of Irish Rugby whose investment has been a key element in the success of rugby at grass roots level throughout the country, and of our Provincial and National Teams”.“In addition to pursuing the immediate withdrawal of the campaign through legal means we are also writing to the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland bringing to their attention the misleading claims”.“We would hope that the management of Largo Foods would withdraw the campaign immediately”. Fugro Displays Its New SRV Simulator at DSEI in London, UK

first_img Fugro Displays Its New SRV Simulator at DSEI in London, UK View post tag: Navy View post tag: Displays View post tag: UK Fugro Subsea Services Ltd gave the first public showing of its new Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV) simulator at the DSEI show in London. The simulator is based on Fugro’s DeepWorks ROV software and is designed to speed up the verification of vehicle design configurations and tooling, develop and practice rescue mission procedures, and improve pilot training. DeepWorks provides true subsea physics-based simulation that can run on a desktop PC or be integrated into a submarine rescue vehicle’s hardware control console. Fugro is experienced in building SRV simulators and has supplied prototype trainers to some of the world’s navies.Among the new enhancements is the ability to navigate to targets using both camera and sonar views in more realistic sea conditions. A new model governs friction behaviours when bodies collide with each other or with the seabed. Manipulator behaviours have also been made more lifelike for tasks such as deploying probes to measure CO2 levels and for posting pods with life-support provisions. Other enhancements include better proximity awareness, easier trim and ballast control and the introduction of a new supervisor’s panel for easier control and monitoring of the training scenario.Fugro’s LR5K SRV simulator was the world’s first simulator that provided 3D simulation of rescue operations. Fugro also pioneered ray tracing, which provides highly realistic sonar simulation for navigation training, along with altimeter-based ranging for hatch mating, and pod posting. Models have been developed for a range of SRVs including the Perry Slingsby LR7, OceanWorks Merlion 500, and ADS 2000.Visitors to the Fugro stand at DSEI had the opportunity to play a game version of the SRV simulator providing a way of experiencing some of the challenges of navigating to and docking with a distressed submarine.[mappress]Press Release, September 12, 2013; Image: Fugro View post tag: News by topic View post tag: London View post tag: Defence View post tag: DSEi Training & Education View post tag: New Back to overview,Home naval-today Fugro Displays Its New SRV Simulator at DSEI in London, UK September 12, 2013 View post tag: Defense View post tag: Fugro View post tag: SRV View post tag: Naval View post tag: Simulator Share this articlelast_img read more

London, Lancashire schemes to create £10bn pooled investment fund

first_imgThe Lancashire Country Pension Fund and the London Pensions Fund Authority (LPFA) have announced a partnership to create a £10bn (€13bn) pooled investment fund as both schemes look for cost savings and improved governance. It comes as the UK government looks to legislate changes to Local Government Pension Schemes (LGPS), aiming to create two collective investment vehicles for listed and alternative investments. Both pension schemes currently employ in-house investment teams and have stated they wish to increase internal investment expertise. The so-called asset and liability partnership will see the funds merge investment expertise and liability management and will eventually cover all areas, including administration. Investments will be run by an external fund authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and owned jointly by the two funds. The £4.9bn LPFA, created by the merger of several legacy pension arrangements stemming from the abolition of the Greater London Authority, now administers around 20,000 members. The £5.3bn Lancashire Pension Fund provides pensions to 150,000 public sector workers in the North-West English county.Susan Martin, chief executive at the LPFA, told IPE that, aside from pooling assets, the new fund would allow the growth of viable asset classes. The partnership will also improve the funds’ governance and administration, she said.“Liability management starts with having accurate data and ends with finding assets that match liabilities,” she said.Martin added that the structure of the partnership and how it would work in practice were still being discussed with Lancashire, with no firm decisions on which personnel from which scheme would lead the investment fund or where it would be situated. She also said both pension funds had to focus on setting up the partnership in the best interest of members and would not seek any additional pension fund contributors until fully operational. The LPFA shaved nearly £400m from its deficit over the year to April on the back of investment returns and the revamping its fund structure.Martin said this was evidence that the two pension funds could scale up and achieve better investment returns and internal cost savings by working together.Councillor Jennifer Mein, leader of the Lancashire County Council, said the partnership would allow the fund to build on its “proactive approach” to asset and liability management.“The government should be using the good practice of funds to drive up the performance of the Local Government Pension Scheme, rather than dumbing down to the average,” she said. The government is expected to announce its decision on the future of the LGPS in early 2015.Both pension funds responded to government consultation suggesting that mandating switches to passive investment was not the answer to reducing deficits in the LGPS, with more collaboration on governance and liability management mooted as a more appropriate solution.Lancashire previously indicated that it would overhaul its asset allocation, earlier this year tendering for transition managers that could handle mandates worth as much as £5bn ahead of “significant” allocation changes.Other London pension funds have also increased collaboration in recent months, announcing the launch of a collective investment vehicle, looking to reduce the cost of external asset management and allow greater exposure to illiquid assets.last_img read more

Pogba injury heaps pressure on Man Utd boss Solskjaer

first_imgFILE PHOTO: Ole Gunnar SolskjaerManchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Paul Pogba is a doubt for Manchester United’s match against Arsenal, giving beleaguered manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a fresh headache as he juggles his scant attacking resources. The France midfielder hurt his ankle again in the League Cup match with Rochdale in midweek on his return to the side after not playing since late August.Pogba played the whole game as United edged past the League One team on penalties after a 1-1 draw but he did not take a penalty and did not attend a team bonding dinner at Juan Mata’s restaurant after the game.Solskjaer revealed on Friday that his ankle knock was the reason he did not join his teammates.“The situation is Paul finished the game, 90 minutes fantastically, but he got a knock to his ankle which is very swollen,” said Solskjaer.“So it was better for him not to go there with the team and he’s in a race for Monday. He is a doubt, but that is the way it is.”Forwards Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are also facing a battle to be fit for Monday’s game at Old Trafford, with Solskjaer short of attacking options.Martial is still trying to recover from a thigh injury sustained last month while Rashford limped off with a groin problem in the 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Sunday. If neither of those two makes it, Mason Greenwood will be in line to start his first Premier League game. The 17-year-old has scored in each of United’s past two home games, against Astana in the Europa League and then against Rochdale, so his manager would have no qualms about throwing him in against the Gunners.“Mason has proven that when he is in the box, he’s dangerous,” said the Norwegian. “What has pleased me about him is that he doesn’t turn down chances to finish.“We have managed him as you can’t just throw him in the deep end all the time. But he has proved in those games he is ready for it.”United are currently languishing in eighth spot in the Premier League with eight points from their six matches and only one league win in the past five.It is not the start that United fans were hoping for, but Solskjaer said the team were making progress.“I never said it was going to be easy this season,” he said. “There are going to be bumps in the road, highs and lows. But when we lose a game, we have to trust ourselves and what we are doing.“We have to keep our eyes on the prize and the principles we believe in. It is a team that is evolving and improving. There are no issues with the attitude, the work rate, the desire.“You can see the boys want to impress, and want to do well.”Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Steelers hoping Killer Bs strike before time runs out

first_imgPittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown makes a catch in a drill during an NFL football practice, Tuesday, June 12, 2018, in Pittsburgh. (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t talk like someone eyeing the finish line.If anything, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is doing what he can to push it further into the distance. The 36-year-old overhauled his diet in preparation for his 15th season and points to the lack of time spent in the trainer’s room during camp as proof the choices he’s made are working.Asked if he feels rejuvenated and Roethlisberger nods.“I really like where this team is,” the two-time Super Bowl winner said. “I think if you didn’t have a good feeling about this team it probably wouldn’t be as exciting, but I am excited about this group.”The feeling, however, could be fleeting. Eight months removed from a stunning home playoff loss to Jacksonville , the Steelers are well aware the missed opportunities in recent seasons are starting to pile up. While Pittsburgh has reached the postseason in each of the past four years, the Steelers have just three playoff victories to show for it. Le’Veon Bell, shown here in this New Pittsburgh Courier file photo from Brian Cook, rushed for nearly 180 yards Oct. 15 against the Chiefs in the Steelers’ 19-13 win.Though Pittsburgh is heavily favored to win a third consecutive AFC North title, the window that once seemed so wide open could be starting to close. All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell is likely playing his final season in black-and-gold after failing to come to terms on a new contract. The offensive line features three Pro Bowlers but also three starters in their 30s.While Roethlisberger downplays any additional sense of urgency — he’s been around long enough to know that any season that doesn’t end with a victory parade through downtown Pittsburgh in early February is considered a disappointment — he’s also well aware the standard coach Mike Tomlin mentions so frequently has not been met.“Winning games can lead to Super Bowl opportunities is always our ultimate goal,” he said. “There are 31 other teams doing the same, but that needs to be our singular focus.”A focus that was lacking at times in 2017 even as the Steelers rolled to a 13-3 record. There was the national anthem debacle in Chicago. The drama surrounding enigmatic wide receiver Martavis Bryant. The late season decision to cut linebacker James Harrison. The devastating spinal injury to budding star linebacker Ryan Shazier. Social media chatter of a rematch with New England in the AFC title game, chatter that looked foolish after the Jaguars beat the Steelers at Heinz Field for the second time in four months. The front office has done what it can to limit the distractions heading into 2018. Bryant was traded to Oakland. Harrison is retired. Longtime quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner takes over as offensive coordinator for Todd Haley. Shazier is walking again and serving as a de facto coach/scout as his body continues to recover. The message could not be clearer: the team that’s built to win now needs to win. Now.“Time is running out for everybody,” center Maurkice Pouncey said. “I know it’s all fun and games for everybody at the beginning but man it’s time to win. It’s been too long.”Other things to look for as Pittsburgh vies for a fifth consecutive playoff berth for only the third time in franchise history:REMODELED BACK END: The Steelers gave the secondary a massive overhaul after the Jaguars lit them up for 45 points in January, drafting safety Terrell Edmunds in the first round and signing veteran Morgan Burnett from Green Bay. The goal is to reduce the number of big plays allowed. Pittsburgh gave up 13 passes of more than 40 yards, tied for third-most in the league. Burnett’s sure tackling will help in the run game and Pittsburgh believes third-year safety Sean Davis’ athleticism will allow him to be an effective center fielder at free safety.FLIP FLOP: Pittsburgh exercised the fifth-year option on the contract of outside linebacker Bud Dupree in the offseason, a sign it believes the 2015 first-round pick’s best days are ahead of him despite uneven results in his first three years. The Steelers moved Dupree from the left side to the right side in the spring, confident he’ll be a more effective pass rusher attacking the quarterback’s blind side. Either way, Dupree understands he’s still in the “prove it” mode in his career and needs to become more consistent at a position that’s long been a focal point in Pittsburgh’s 3-4 defense.BELL’S BET: There may not be a player in the NFL with more at stake in 2018 than Bell. The 26-year-old believes he’s in a class by himself among running backs and wants to be paid accordingly. He’ll make $14.4 million this season playing under his one-year franchise tender, but thinks he’ll be even more valuable on the open market next spring. Bell shouldn’t lack for opportunities to show he’s worth a massive payday. He led the NFL in touches last season and Tomlin could opt to use him even more extensively knowing he’ll be out the door in the spring.TIGHT SPOT: The Steelers are still trying to find a legit heir to tight end Heath Miller, who quietly stepped away in the spring of 2016. While Jesse James has evolved into a solid complementary player, Vance McDonald is the closest thing to a complete package Pittsburgh has at a vital position. One problem: McDonald has struggled to stay on the field. He missed practically all of camp with a foot injury. The Steelers need him to be a factor in the passing game to help take some of the attention off Brown and second-year wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.___More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/tag/NFLfootball and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) passes in the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game against the Tennessee Titans, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, in Pittsburgh. Osaka charms Japan with her manners _ and broken Japanese

first_imgNone of the main-line newspapers dwelled too much on her background, which has been well reported. She was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, moved to the United States when she was 3 and now lives in Florida where she has trained for more than a decade. In an interview Monday from New York on Japan’s TBS television, she was asked what she wants to do now. She replied in Japanese: “Have curried rice topped with a pork cutlet.” Then she slipped into English and said: “I am very honored. I don’t know how to say that in Japanese.”She gave some of the same answers in a similar interview with Japan’s NTV television.“She is such a lovable character,” said Seiji Miyane, the NTV talk show host. She smiled through the media pressure, which several newspapers have called a Japanese trait. Her broken Japanese works as an asset, apologizing occasionally for getting the wrong word — or not knowing the Japanese word at all.“She is not the type of person who asserts herself boldly, but she is shy and humble and that makes her look more like a Japanese,” Junko Okamoto, a communications specialist, wrote in the weekly magazine Toyokeizai.Okamoto also said Osaka could become a face of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, leading to big sponsorship deals.Forbes magazine has reported that Williams is the highest earning female athlete with income of $18 million per year, almost all from endorsements. The Evening Fuji tabloid newspaper, citing Forbes, speculated wildly about Osaka’s potential lifetime earnings. Its headline suggested she could earn $100 million. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara) People walk by a huge screen showing US Open women’s singles champion Naomi Osaka with her trophy, in Tokyo, Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara)TOKYO (AP) — Naomi Osaka’s halting Japanese, her manners — she bowed and apologized after beating Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final — and her simple charm have swelled national pride in Japan and eclipsed many questions about her mixed-race parentage in a famously insular country. Two days after becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam tennis title, Osaka is still filling the front pages of the country’s three major daily newspapers and leads the discussions on talk shows. The perspective from Japan on Monday: Osaka is being embraced as Japanese despite her mixed background. National pride — at least for now — is overriding questions of cultural identity and what it means to be Japanese.Williams’ dramatic behavior during a chaotic final on Saturday, a hot topic in the United States and around the world, has been largely brushed aside in Japan with the focus on Osaka’s poise under pressure.Japan’s largest newspaper, Yomiuri, called Osaka a “new heroine that Japan is proud of” and characterized her appeal as “the contrast between her strength on the court and her innocent character off the court.”Yomiuri centered Osaka’s photograph holding the U.S. Open trophy at the top of its Monday front page — as did the two other large dailies. In a headline inside the paper, Yomiuri called her an “Overnight Queen — Powerful and Stable.”The Asahi newspaper also called her the “New Queen,” picking up on her mix of “strength and gentleness.” Sports and tabloid newspapers reporting Naomi Osaka’s victory in the U.S. Open tennis finals are sold at a newsstand in Tokyo, Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara) The Mainichi, one of top three general circulation newspapers, noted that Osaka was wearing a dress at a victory celebration from a well-known Japanese designer.Osaka’s 73-year-old grandfather, Tetsuo Osaka, surfaced in several interviews from Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, where he heads a fishing cooperative. He said he plans to meet his granddaughter when she plays next week in a tournament in Japan.Their relationship seems solid now, but the New York Times reported that for a more than a decade Naomi’s mother, Tamaki, had little contact with her family in Japan.Roland Kirishima, a photographer who is half Japanese and Scottish, criticized some internet comments questioning if Osaka is really Japanese, because of her darker skin color.“Look at the French soccer team that won the World Cup,” he wrote on Twitter. “Half of the players are immigrants’ sons or multi-racial. I’m surprised many people in Japan are still obsessed with racial purity. It’s 21st century already. Please overcome this type of insular prejudice.”It looks like Japan has taken at least a first step.___Stephen Wade on Twitter: http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP___More AP tennis coverage: https://www.apnews.com/tag/apf-Tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sportslast_img read more
